It really annoys me if I am speaking to someone and their phone rings or someone texts them and they give the full attention to that and ignore the person they were speaking to...ie ME. I have been known to walk off and leave them to it.
And if anyone gets the phone out to text whilst sat eating with me I always ask them to either stop or leave the table.

If you've texted or spoken to the person and they know you have wished them a happy birthday, what does it matter what other people think?

Surely calling someone on the phone is worse in that respect? At least a text can wait till later, when your free to text back or when you can be bothered. If someone calls you your obliged to talk to them right away, which is often inconvienient.

I'd much rather get a text than a phone call...

I was more meaning the folk that know i dont like text that insist on doing it....at least if the phone i can say i'm busy and i'll call you back later.If i say by text i'm busy so i'll text you later they reply what you doing etc...it's quicker with a phone call and especially if you want to put them off.
