Personally I think it's disrespectful. I could not stand her, but she has family who are in mourning...I think her death... and her loved ones should be respected.

Part of me is thrilled to bits about this, I'm glad people aren't shying away from their feelings towards what Thatcher did to the country. But out of humility towards a family who have lost their loved one, it shouldn't be played imo.

It's enough that it's No1...

I liked Glenda Jacksons "tribute" to her...she said what millions feel.

I cant see any reason why the BBC should shy away from playing it, the days when Mary Whitehouse got them to ban playing "My ding a ling" on the top 20 show are long gone.
Its anticipated to be a possible "number one" by the weekend.

I reckon a lot of people will be chanting it during the Funeral Cortege though !

Read some history and see that people have behaved like this forever and it aint going to change now.

....of course the consensus politics of the 1970s was such a HUUUUUGE economic success for the country that the idea of someone taking a completely different approach has been too much for some to cope with.

I wonder just how long the country would have limped along with the ineffectual policies of both the Labour Party and the Tory Party during the prolonged post war era and I wonder what state the economy might have been in by the mid 1980s.

There is no doubt that the legacy of Thatcherism has caused great pain and strife to many but is there any clear evidence to support the theory that continuing the practice of consensus politics would have been for the greater good in the end? It couldn't last forever and it's astonishing that it lasted for as long as it did.

Also, if the same policies had been instituted by a male PM at the helm, I wonder if he would have come in for the same protracted criticism, decades after he left office? I suspect he wouldn't and that Baroness Thatcher is being doubly vilified because she was a woman - and a very determined, iron-willed woman at that. That in itself still seems to be anathema to many people.

Your feminist angle on this is weak. Thatcher was and is hated for what she did, not because of her gender. Moreover her selection of an all male cabinet (just one powerless female) was hardly a fine example for budding womanhood now, was it?

A lot of other countries seemed to have muddled through with concensus politics.

In my opinion its being a decent human being to let someone who has just died be buried or cremated peacfully.
No one has to pretend to like her or her politics, but to party in the streets and openly celebrate her death makes the people who do it seem as uncaring as she was.
As for "people have behaved like this forever"....people and society change, we used to have the death penalty, husbands used to legally rape their wives, practicing homosexuals used to be jailed......nothing is unchangable.

What I said was that she was doubly villifed because of it - not solely. I have no doubt that she would still be disliked for the policies alone but I do believe that this antipathy has been magnified because of her being a woman.

I didn't suggest that she was a particular figurehead for the cause of women in politics - because she wasn't - and I think she much preferred to have men in her cabinet.... with her in charge.

Although she was a powerful woman, she was not really a feminist but I just don't think that some people could reconcile a woman taking such a hard line in the cut and thrust of politics. They can now... but not then. The only other woman who even came close was Barbara Castle.

Other countries which don't have these levels of internal strife and class war,

seem to do better than the UK.
