Ed Milliband to allow councils to ban payday lenders.

Labour leader Ed Miliband has promised to give councils more powers to ban payday lenders, pawnbrokers and bookmakers from town centres.

Launching his party's local election campaign, he said it would "stand up for those without power" and criticised "extortionate" rates of interest.

Mr Miliband accused ministers of "not standing up to powerful interests".

That's a step in the right direction but unfortunately as all these benefit decreases kick in more people than ever will turn to them to try and keep a roof over their head. It's a vicious circle.

My town alone has about 5 bookmakers and it is always filled with those who can least afford it,hoping against hope their 50p bet comes in at massive odds. I'd like my council reined in on how many of these type stores they give clearance to to open. Thankfully we haven't got any payday loan stores but if people are desperate [and they will be to think of even going to one] then they will go the the next town to access one.

Ban them altogether and give people a decent amount to live on.

Pawnbrokers have been around for ever, so I'm quite surprised to find those included tbh.

We have 2 bookmakers (I think) and like you no payday loan companies but there are still ways to access loans such as Provident etc and they have huge interest rates too.

Morrisona have started cutting night staff here. The reason being theres not enough stuff going out in the day to warrant so many shelf filling at night.
Day staff are going more on part time too.
Benefits money being cut is having a massive impact on spending and therefore jobs already and that's before it all kicks in fully.

anyone with an ounce of sense would realise that reducing people spending power will result in less spending and jobs being cut. it's a vicious circle.

Story of a ten pound note.

I find a tenner in an old coat and go and pay off a ten pound loan from a mate.
He goes to the bookies and puts it on a horse.
The bookie pays the window cleaner with it.
The window cleaner buys his wife a bunch of flowers from the florist.
The florist pays a ten pound loan off from a mate.
The mate pays the milkman.
The milkman pays the news agent.
The news agent pays the baker.
The baker buys suasages from the butcher and at some point in the day the ten pound note stops travelling and ends up in the bank or someones pocket.
That's one ten pound note.
When you pull millions of ten pound notes out of the economy everything grinds to a halt.

I keep one on me incase of emergency Ali, but because of the hellish winter we have had I was changing coats/jackets a lot. I had forgotten I put it there. Bonus.

Definite bonus, £20 is a good find. Although I don't tend to put money in my pockets I am one of those who wraps change up in receipts and stuffs it in my purse. I did find a fiver a couple of times so almays make sure I check before I throw receipts away now.

Dread to think how many fivers I might have thrown out Ooerrr
