UKIP: Nigel Farage claims candidate Alex Wood's 'Nazi salute' was him 'imitating pot plant'

Nigel Farage today defended “Nazi salute” candidate Alex Wood, saying the UKIP man had been “imitating a pot plant”.

The extraordinary excuse came as the UKIP leader tried to put a brave face on the growing list of his party’s embarrassing candidates.

Mr Farage said he “nearly had kittens” when he saw the Daily Mirror’s pictures of Mr Wood, who is standing for Somerset council, doing a Nazi salute and with a knife clenched between his teeth.

He told the Huffington Post website: “I’ve looked carefully into this and spoken to Alex and I believe him when he says that he was angrily trying to take a camera off his girlfriend who was annoyingly taking pictures of him in the pub imitating a pot plant.

"These things happen – I should know.”

He added: “While it is true that a handful of UKIP candidates have caused us embarrassment, others have been quite unfairly traduced.”

Despite Mr Farage’s words of support, Mr Wood has been suspended from the party and will stand as an independent in tomorrow’s elections.
