Trial By Jury

I have never been called for jury service (dunno why really) Ooerrr

lol anyway, I consider it a lucky escape. It is not something I want to do.
Thinking about it brought to mind the Vicky Pryce case where the jury were dismissed, because of asking what was meant by reasonable doubt? if I am right.

I do wonder how many people that even after having been given the judges instructions, might have wanted to ask questions before making a decision but maybe didn't like to?

If you have been called for jury service, were you completely happy about the verdict reached?

I dont think I would want to be on jury service.
I watched a programme the other night where it was 11-1 guilty, and the one woman who thought innocent said she got loads of abuse off the others jurers because she wouldnt change her mind!

I'm not sure quite how it works, but in some cases they do say the judge accepts a majority vote. Perhaps that wasn't so in this case and they all just wanted to end it and go home except her. Giggle

It was in America, it ended up being a mistrial because she wouldnt change her mind lol
It was part of a crime programme and they had an interview with that juror, fuck me she didnt half go on about it...how other jurors were threatening her and everything! Shocked

That is how it came across.
She didnt really have any persuasive argument towards why she felt the person should have been innocent other than ...''she felt it in her heart''
Whereas they interviewed a couple of other jurors who gave pretty valid reasons as to why they went for guilty.

Well if the other jurors showed valid reasons as to why they went for guilty, it does rather make her sound a bit foolish with her........"I felt it in my heart" remark.

That is why I wouldnt want to be on a jury....imagine being on it with someone like that!

I saw a report the other day on the Philpott Trial,
The Jury delivered a 10-2 guilty verdict on Mairead , so it was not a unanimous verdict on her guilt.
The Judge accepted the Majority Verdict.

My sister did jury duty and called innocent... The guy got off on the Scottish not proven verdict... She hated it but the case just wasn't strong enough to say no reasonable doubt, must be hard to watch someone you think is guilty in your heart walk away because the prosecution's case just isn't stong enough

I did jury duty a couple of years ago...it was mainly hanging around. Then on the last day I got sent to the main Crown court in Manchester where a big trial was about to take place. i was picked for the jury but the judge decided to release us because we had all done our 2 weeks and he didn't think it was fair to make us go back for at least another 2.

Some of the people on the juries seemed a bit stupid tbh......scary that peoples fate can be decided by any Tom Dick or Harry.

This jury was particularly thick...and it only came to light because it was a well publicised case....I bet there are thousands like them.

It was probably more down to "Legaleese Terms" rather than the Jury being thick !

On one of the juries I was on one member could hardly speak English....not ideal really.
