Sheets and Blankets vs Duvets

Does anyone still use sheets and blankets on their beds these days?

I suppose these days with the house having been warmed up all evening with central heating, a duvet is sufficient.
But I can remember years ago as kids when our house felt freezing cold upstairs at night when you went to bed.
The more blankets the better, with even a coat thrown over as well at times. Ooerrr

I have a duvet and when it's cold I add a blanket on top too.

We find a duvet is enough and in fact I get too hot at times, even with the small window open all night, all weathers.

Me too.
When I was a kid it was blankets and army coats and if your that cold get in with your sisters!
Ice patterns on the insides of the bedroom windows in winter and that was the 1950's ... healthiest generation on record they reckon.

I can remember electric blankets....They used to scare me as a kid though because i remember seeing a news story where some of them used to catch fire affraid

...then insisting on having my hot water bottle back again!

When quilts first appeared they seemed really strange ... how do you tuck them in?

.....I can remember staying at my grandparents house and them saying...these are expensive one's and you can leave them on all night...I spent half the night awake and petrified roflmao

When central heating first appeared it did so slowly and the posh kids got it first.
When this mate of mine said on the way to school that they were having central heating fitted that day we asked him what it was.
He said ... I think they are going to move the fire to the middle of the room (coal fire) and put a metal chimney through the ceiling through the bedroom and out the roof.
Wow!!!
Yeah everyone can sit round the fire then ....

oh god yeah, the ice patterns on the inside of windows.....I remember them well Shocked

but that was later than the 1950's in my parents house.
I remember the kitchen always being warm because of the boiler and the front room, either electric fire or a real one in the grate, but upstairs was a different story. Sheets and Blankets vs Duvets _freddo

But like you say, I think we were healthier for it.................strange really when you think about it.

I had asthma as a child, the cold wasn't helpful.

I also remember fitted carpets arriving in the home.
Same kid ... posh bastard ... we're having wall to wall carpets put in today ... uhhh!
That's what it was called then ... not fitted carpet but wall to wall.
A lot of people wouldn't have it at first because ... you couldn't take it out in the spring and beat the bugs out of it and get sunlight and fresh air into it.

We never had central heating either...My mother had a very bad habit of buying bloody old and decrepit places and then doing them up over time...then once they were brought up to scratch and really nice we moved on to the next bloody hell hole...method to her madness sure...but we got a bit pissed off with it at the time Laughing

The twin tub was going and we were getting a front loader!!!!
You put the washing in a hole in the front and it was automatic ... did everything except the ironing.
Sounded well dodgey trusting all that water behind a hole in the front.

I can still remember the rag and bone man coming up my road as a kid!....You have to pay to have anything taken away these days!

Home deliveries were the norm back then but are now sold to you as hey what a great idea!
From horse to butchers bike to telegram by motorbike ... all delivered to your door and yes Phil ... the rag and bone man took it away and gave the kids a balloon or your mum a donkey stone to clean the step!

Wow I just Googled donkey stone to help me explain should one of you ask and ... they still exist!!!

Gerald Buckley still sells the donkey stones at his family business, Bailey's Hardware, in the indoor market at Ashton.

Mr Buckley said: "You never used to buy a donkey stone. The rag and bone man would give you one in return for any old items and would ask you what colour you wanted. We still have people in here asking for them, especially people living in weaver-type cottages in Mossley and Glossop who use them to clean their steps.
